Martin Luther King Day of Service
Thinking Beyond the Borders of Our Campus: MLK Day 2012
“As a Resident Assistant for the Honors Living Learning Community, I found myself seeking programming opportunities this spring that exemplified the value of service that I hoped to instill in my residents. That said, I instantly found a great match for this goal with the Martin Luther King (MLK) Day of Service that the Center for Community Service sponsored this spring. During this day of service, my team of residents and I had the chance to participate in hands-on painting activities with NU Mural Club and writing/creativity workshops with 826 Boston. Participating in this service initiative provided my residents with the skills and motivation to think creatively around the challenges facing our local community and truly develop an investment in the education of local youth. The efforts of the Center for Community Service to bring seemingly “outside” service opportunities to campus provided us with an enjoyable opportunity to challenge our perception of service and genuinely think beyond the borders of our campus when defining the Northeastern community. From developing creative writing prompts to collective painting efforts to excellent reflection and team building, MLK Day of Service provided my residents and I with a fantastic experience.”- Pete Petrin on MLK Day of Service 2012
